Lundi 29 novembre 14:00-15:30 - Florent Gimbert - IGE Grenoble

Understanding glacier bed friction and river bed sediment transport from dedicated measurements and revised theories

Résumé : Glaciers and rivers are inherent features of the Earth’s surface, and are undergoing particularly strong dynamical changes in response to climate warming with direct impacts on society. Understanding these changes, however, is not an easy task. The dynamics of these objects is set by complex and superimposing physical processes that are challenging to monitor at relevant spatial and temporal scales. In this talk I will show how unique and novel measurements in these fields of application, including the use of a bicycle wheel and of seismic observations, can provide novel constraints on the involved physics. Throughout the talk I will also illustrate in which ways these novel constraints may improve our monitoring and predicting capabilities to understand the dynamics of these objects in a broader context.
