Soft Interfaces under Controlled Interaction Conditions : New Approaches to Study their Structure/Interaction-related Properties

Résumé : The modification of solid substrates by soft polymeric materials is one the most versatile methods to create various interfaces of desired complexity and tailored structural and physico-chemical properties. This is possible thanks to an enormous variety of suitable synthetic and natural “building blocks” with characteristic response to thermodynamic key parameters, such as temperature and pressure. Furthermore, soft thin films are used routinely to mimic biological interfaces and to look into highly sophisticated processes, whose mechanism can be inferred from a systematic investigation from macroscopic separation (non-interacting condition) to interfacial adhesion (mutual interaction).
The correlation between macromolecular interactions and the resulting system properties is not trivial, and its understanding is essential to elucidate the process mechanisms of both technological and biological relevance. However, these studies often encounter significant methodological restrictions, as only a limited number of surface-sensitive techniques are able to probe buried, homogenous interfaces in a perturbation-free manner.
This seminar presents some case studies of complex polymer assemblies and biomimetic bacterial interfaces, where neutron reflectometry has proved capability of elucidating their internal structure under controlled interaction conditions. In addition, it describes a new universal approach for the investigation of soft interfaces at varying interacting scenario from macroscopic separation to full surface adhesion.
