Learning the Space-time Phases of Bacterial Multicellular Behavior

Résumé : Bacteria display a range of multicellular behaviors, ranging from collective gene regulation to collective movement and growth in the form of biofilms. These collective behaviors are a fundamental aspect of bacterial proliferation in the environment and during infections. I will first present new microscopy and imaging techniques we recently developed to follow dynamical processes in bacterial biofilms and swarms at the single-cell level. Based on data from these new imaging techniques, bacterial genetics, and mathematical models, I will then demonstrate how the two bacterial collective behaviors, swarming and biofilm formation, are unified by physical interactions, chemical signaling, and dynamical transitions.
