Wavy Graphene Stacks

The internal surface area of a porous material depends on the method used to measure it, and differences in the results are an indicator of inhomogeneities and bottlenecks in the pore structure.

By comparing the surface area of disordered graphene stacks measured by gas adsorption (N2 and Ar) with that found from small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), a picture can be built up of regions that are inaccessible or merely partially accessible to gas molecules. With graphene, the natural distortions of the sheets offer a route to systems with nanoporosity that can be modified by an external stimulus.
This study, carried out in collaboration with groups in Japan and Hungary, pays particular attention to the pitfalls of measuring surface areas by SAXS.
