Photoacoustic imaging is a multi-wave biomedical imaging technique that relies on the emission of ultrasonic waves following the absorption of light, by photoacoustic effect. This technique has undergone a huge boom in biomedical research for about ten years, for two main reasons. On the one hand, deep within the tissues, it is possible to obtain images of optical absorption with the resolution of ultrasound, well beyond the limits imposed in depth to purely optical techniques by multiple scattering. On the other hand, the photoacoustic effect is specific to optical absorption, and it is therefore possible to develop high resolution photoacoustic microscopy approaches (optical wavelength resolution) that provide a specific absorption contrast, based on endogenous absorbers (naturally occurring in tissue) such as blood in vascular networks, without the need for contrast agents.
