Research

Ternary heterogeneous mixtures

This project concerns the behavior of ternary aqueous
solutions presenting transitions in their phase diagrams.
Hydrophobicity and temperature play a determinant role
in the structural nano-organization of these complex liq-
uids that undergo in some conditions spinodal decom-
position or biphasic separation. One example of each
case is examined, respectively : ultra-soft surfactant-free
micro-emulsions, as often found in cosmetics or alcoholic
mixtures and described as the (pre-)Ouzo effect (coll. I. Hoffmann, ILL, C. Alba-Simionesco, LLB Saclay, T. Zemb, ICSM), and aqueous biphasic
systems used for separative chemistry (coll. I. Billard,
LEPMI Grenoble).

Water Transport in Soft ConfinemenT

ANR TWIST 2018-2021

Le projet TWIST, Transport of Water In Soft confinemenT, vise à établir un cadre permettant de prédire le transport de l’eau dans les matériaux poreux élastiques. Les matériaux "mous" mettent en effet en jeu plusieurs facteurs qui influencent le transport dans leurs nano-canaux : les hétérogénéités en terme d’hydrophobicité/hydrophilicité de la surface confinante, la surface mal définie due à la
pénétration plus ou moins profonde de l’eau dans la matrice, et les déformations ou effets mécaniques tels que le gonflement qui sont propres à la nature molle de la matrice et dépendent de l’état thermodynamique μ(T, P ) de l’eau confinée. Une description pertinente du transport de l’eau en milieu confiné mou doit donc considérer les effets d’adsorption et de confinement, les mécanismes microscopiques de diffusion ainsi que les déformations locales et globales de la matrice. Nous proposons ici de développer un cadre complet pour décrire le transport de l’eau à toutes les échelles en matrice molle tenant compte des couplages entre l’adsorption et les déformations.

Formation et stabilité des gels moléculaire

Physicals gels formed by small organic gelators find applications in diverse domains, although the understanding of their formation and stability severely limits their practical use. We therefore undertook the study of a small amphiphilic gelator in various solvents as model system, with the aim of characterizing both structural and dynamical aspects involved in the gel phase stability. The investigations are based on quasi-elastic neutron scattering in order to provide a quantitative description of the relaxation process of both gel components.

Techniques expérimentales

Spectroscopie par réseaux transitoires
La spectroscopie transitoire est une technique spectroscopique optique non linéaire pompe-sonde. Un réseau d’indice transitoire est photo-induit sur l’échantillon par l’interférence de deux impulsions de pompe, et sondé par diffraction du faisceau de sonde. L’intensité de diffraction résolue en temps reflète les modes de relaxation de l’échantillon jusqu’à l’équilibre. Une détection hétérodyne permet une grande amélioration du signal avec une séparation des parties réelles et imaginaires de l’indice de réfraction. En matière douce, loin de toute résonance, la technique fournit en une seule donnée les oscillations acoustiques amorties se produisant à des temps courts, la dynamique masse / densité et la diffusion thermique.
